We have not even started seeing Snapdragon 820 officially perform in smartphones and tablets, and here we have already started stumbling across leaks which state how capable Qualcomm’s next flagship SoC, Snapdragon 830 is going to be. Well, thanks to this latest report, it looks like the upcoming SoC is going to much more than we expected.
Snapdragon 830 Could See The Emergence Of 8GB RAM In Both Smartphones And Tablets
While smartphones featuring 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM is quite impressive, there will a time when mobile devices will start packing 6-8GB of RAM. So how come we will not be able to see this soon enough? This is because the amount of memory incorporated in a mobile device will depend upon the limit of the CPU. However, this limit will significantly increase thanks to Snapdragon 830, which will undoubtedly succeed Snapdragon 820 in both performance and efficiency.
In short, we could start seeing smartphones pack more RAM than an entry level laptop, which is extremely impressive. However, the only drawback to this is that the more RAM incorporated in a mobile device will also mean that the overall power draw will increase but since the LPDDR4 memory functions on lower amounts of power, we could definitely be seeing memory chips of the future being manufactured on a smaller node, which will also reduce power consumption by a considerable margin. Last, but certainly not least, Snapdragon 830 will also be manufactured on a smaller node compared to Snapdragon 820.
Both Samsung and TSMC are racing against one another to ensure which chip manufacturing firm is able to produce a high yield of 10nm FinFET chips first. TMSC might have failed in the 14nm FinFET race, but has taken the fight right back to Samsung, indicating that we could be seeing 10nm FinFET SoCs much sooner rather than later. According to the Chinese source, Snapdragon 830 has apparently been confirmed to feature the ‘msm8998’ codename, which is only logical since Snapdragon 820 features the codename msm8996.
Right now, it is too early to tell of the capabilities of Snapdragon 830, but we are definitely confident that in a couple of years’ time, handsets will be sporting more RAM that you can actually utilize, provided Google and other smartphone manufacturers pay heed to optimizing the Android platform even further than it is right now. Now that we have found out about the capabilities of Snapdragon 830, we will keep you updated on the latest information as soon as we stumble across it.
Are you guys excited to see a mammoth amount of RAM in smartphones? Let us know your thoughts.
