Among the more interesting Wii U games releasing next year in all regions is Pokken Tournament, a unique fighting game developed in collaboration with Bandai Namco. The game made its debut in Japanese arcades last Summer and it will be released on Wii U sometime during 2016 in North America and Europe.
As the game is quickly approaching its Japanese release date, Nintendo has been showing more of the Wii U version of Pokken Tournament in the past few weeks. And more of it has been shown a few hours ago with a new Japanese TV Commercial which showcases some of the game’s playable fighters. Even though the commercial is only available in Japanese as of now, it’s definitely a good watch even for Western players.
As the name implies, Pokken Tournament is a unique fighting game combining elements from the Pokemon franchise, such as powerful special moves and the Mega Evolution mechanic, and the popular fighting game series Tekken. The whole experience, however, is going to be less technical than in the Tekken games so that even those who haven’t played many fighting games can enjoy Pokken Tournament to the fullest.
The Wii U version of Pokken Tournament is going to come with some features that aren’t available in the original arcade release, such as new characters Shadow Mewtwo (a special character that can also be unlocked right from the start by using the Shadow Mewtwo amiibo card), Sceptile and more. Yesterday it’s also been confirmed that the Wii U version of Pokken Tournament is going to support local multiplayer.
Pokken Tournament will be released in Japan on March 18th 2016. The game’s North American and European release dates have yet to be confirmed but we will surely hear more about the matter in the near future, so stay tuned for all the latest news.
