AMD officially confirmed today that its dual Fiji “Gemini” Fury X2 card, has been delayed to 2016 to align it with major VR HMD launches next year. AMD originally debuted its dual Fiji board back in June at E3, along with all of its Fiji products the Fury X, Fury and Nano.
At E3 AMD announced that its dual Fiji board would launch sometime in the Autumn of 2015 ahead of the holiday season, however this has not happened and the company shed some light on the matter via earlier today via an email to our friend Damien from Hardware.fr.

Q. On the E3 Livecast, Lisa committed to shipping Fiji Gemini by Xmas. What happened? Is Fiji Gemini delayed?
A. The product schedule for Fiji Gemini had initially been aligned with consumer HMD availability, which had been scheduled for Q415 back in June. Due to some delays in overall VR ecosystem readiness, HMDs are now expected to be available to consumers by early Q216. To ensure the optimal VR experience, we’re adjusting the Fiji Gemini launch schedule to better align with the market.
Working samples of Fiji Gemini have shipped to a variety of B2B customers in Q415, and initial customer reaction has been very positive.
AMD “Gemini” Fury X2 Samples Delivered, Product Launch Set To Coincide With Major VR Head Mounted Display Launches Next year
The official product name for the dual Fiji XT board code named “Gemini” is still unknown, so we’ll be using the “Fury X2” designation to refer to the card in the time being. While the card has been officially delayed to 2016, some figures in the upper echelon of the game development world such as Johann Andersson, chief architect behind the Frostbite engine, have already received a pre-release sample of the new card to play with as we had reported three weeks ago.
We had published an exclusive report last month in which our sources have told us that there have been multiple engineering samples of the card in circulation for a while, a fact that AMD has officially confirmed today. The specifications for the card have been finalized sometime ago, which we’ve shared in an exclusiveearlier this month. The R9 Fury X2 will be the fourth and last Fiji based graphics card from AMD before the release of AMD’s next generation 14nm / 16nm Arctic Islands family.
