Intel Announces Skylake Proccessor Family – 4.5W to 65W Skylake-S, Skylake-H, Skylake-U and Skylake-Y CPUs With DDR4 Support

Today, Intel is officially launching their entire Skylake processor lineup featuring new 4.5W to 65W parts for the 6th generation platform. The new Skylake-S lineup features a total of 8 new SKUs while the rest of the Skylake-H, Skylake-U and Skylake-Y will also make their debut with the latest Skylake core architecture enhancements that deliver improved performance and power efficiency while adding DDR4 support to the mainstream consumer platforms across the board.

Intel Kicks Off Launch of Skylake-S Mainstream Desktop Processor Family – Roadmap To Q4 2015 – Q1 2016 Detailed

While Intel initially kicked off the Skylake family with two processors, the Core i7-6700K and Core i5-6600K that are part of the Skylake-K (Unlocked CPU) lineup, the rest of the lineup officially launches today with newer SKUs based on the 6th generation Skylake microarchitecture. The Skylake-S lineup is made up of 10 total SKUs, two of which have already been launched in the market and are the only unlocked chips in the lineup. Rest of the 8 chips feature four 65W (locked) processors and four 35W low TDP chips. These processors will be compatible with the LGA 1151 socket powered Z170, H170 and B150 chipset based motherboards. Featuring full support for DDR4 memory and next generation storage devices, the Skylake-S platform will deliver improved CPU performance and energy efficiency as compared to the Haswell generation of processors. The chips featured in the Skylake-S lineup are listed down below:

Intel 65W “Mainstream” Skylake-S Processors (Core i7 / Core i5/ Core i3/ Pentium)

The mainstream lineup consists of four chips which include the Core i7-6700 that features same specifications as the Core i7-6700K but doesn’t come in an unlocked package. Similarly, the Core i5-6600 also has the same specifications as seen on the unlocked model but without the K-Series design that allows over-clocking support. Clocks for the Core i7-6700 are maintained at 3.4 GHz base and 4.0 GHz boost while the Core i5-6600 is clocked at 3.3 GHz base and 3.9 GHz boost. The Core i5-6500 is a quad core clocked at 3.2 GHz base and 3.6 GHz boost while the Core i5-6400 is a quad core clocked at 2.7 GHz base and 3.3 GHz boost. All of these chips feature a 65W TDP and the Core i5 models pack 6 MB of L3 cache while the Core i7 model gets 8 MB L3 cache. The Core series lineup will also include a Core i3 processor along with several Pentium series chips.
There will also be a few Pentium series model along with a Core i3 SKU. The details of the Core i3-6100 include a dual core (multi-threaded) design with 4 MB of L3 cache and GT2 graphics chip clocked up to 1000 MHz. The Pentium G4400 will be a dual core design without multi-threading and feature 3 MB of L3 cache. The clock will be maintained at 3.3 GHz with turbo boost frequency and will come with the HD 510 (GT1) graphics chip with a maximum clock speed of 1050 MHz. Both chips will feature a TDP of 65W.

Intel 35W “Low TDP” Skylake-S Processors (Core i7 / Core i5/Pentium)

Over at the more power efficient side, Intel will launch 4 T-Series chips which stand for low-power. All chips feature just 35W TDP and include Core i7-6700T as a multi-threaded quad core with 2.8 GHz base and 3.6 GHz boost clock. It packs 8 MB of L3 cache. The Core i5 models range from the Core i5-6600T, Core i5-6500T and Core i5-6400T featuring 6 MB of L3 cache, quad core (non-multithreaded designs) and boost speeds ranging from 2.8 to 3.6 GHz.

Intel Skylake Goes Mobile – Intel Iris Pro Powered Skylake-U, 4.5W Skylake-Y Inside Compute Sticks

Apart from the Skylake-S platform, Intel will also be introducing their mobility based lineups that include the Skylake-U, Skylake-H, Skylake-H Xeon and Skylake-Y families in the coming months. The 6th generation mobile platforms will be the first solutions to bring DDR4 memory on laptops and notebooks. The mobility based devices will feature full support for Windows 10 operating system and feature Intel WiDi, True Key, Intel RealSense and Cortana support. All of these processors have the latest HD 500 series graphics core that has full support for DirectX 12 functionality. Skylake-U and Skylake-H series will come with Iris Pro graphics core with additional eDRAM to boost the system bandwidth. Intel is aiming for 4.5W (Skylake-Y) to 45W (Skylake-U/H) TDPs on their mobility processors that offer 60% lower active power and have 60% boosted performance.
We will see a range of devices from Gaming Towers, Traditional Towers, Small Form Factor Towers, AIOs, Mini PCs, Portable AIOs and even compute sticks powered by Intel Skylake processors. Looking at the Y-Series lineup, we get to see a new branding scheme. The Skylake-Y series includes the Core M7, Core M5 and Core M3 chips. Additionally, there are Core M7 and Core M5 chips with vPro.
Intel Skylake Processors_Mobility
With Skylake-H, Intel is going to introduce the first fully DDR4 compatible mainstream notebook platform in the consumer market. There are going to be two series for the Skylake-H lineup, the corporate or main stream 45W and 35W chips alongside the low power 25W chips. But before getting to know the processor details, let’s take a quick glance at the the four platform control hubs that are powering the new platform. First up we have the HM170 which will offer the most basic I/O features on the mobility platform and will be integrated on Celeron tier chips. The QM170 PCH will be part of the mainstream processors with vPro functionality and PEG (2×4, 1×8) support along with other features. The CM236 chipset will power Xeon based workstation platform with support for ECC memory, Intel vPro, PEG and other necessary features. The HM170 and QM170 chipsets will features TDPs of just 2.6W while the CM236 chipset will have a 3.6W TDP.

Intel Skylake-H Xeon Mobility Lineup:

Introduced along side the Skylake unlocked processors, the Skylake-H Mobility Workstation platform will include the Xeon E3-1500M V5 family processors. Intel kept their announcement short and didn’t reveal any SKUs for their new Xeon family but that is not the case anymore. We know that Intel plans to launch three Xeon E3-1500M V5 processors which will include the top tier Xeon E3-15**M V5 (Name TBD) that comes with 4 cores and 8 threads. This chip will feature 8 MB of L3 cache and also feature GT4e Iris Pro graphics chips with up to 128 MB L4 (eDRAM) cache. Clock speeds are not yet determined but the chip comes with a 45W TDP that is configurable down to 35W depending on work loads.
The other two chips of this family include the Xeon E3-1505M v5 that is also a 4 core chip with multi-threading support. It comes with clock speeds of 2.8 GHz base and 3.6 GHz boost, featuring 8 MB of L3 cache and the latest GT2 graphics chip (Intel HD 530). This chip will feature a TDP of 45W (35W cTDP). Second processor of the lineup includes the Xeon E3-1505L v5 which is a 25W low power chip that has 4 cores and 8 threads. This chip is clocked at 2.0 GHz base and 2.8 GHz boost while featuring 8 MB of L3 cache.

Intel Skylake-H Core and Celeron Mobility Lineup:

Coming to the mainstream lineup, we find Intel’s high-performance, Core i7-6920HQ processor with four cores, 8 threads and 8 MB of L3 cache. This processor comes with a base clock of 2.9 GHz and turbos up to 3.8 GHz while featuring the standard TDP of 45W (35W cTDP). The Core i7-6822HQ on the other hand is a 25W low power chip with 4 cores and 4 threads, featuring 8 MB of L3 cache and clock speeds of 2.0 GHz base and 2.8 GHz boost. The 45W Core i7-6820HQ is clocked at 2.7 GHz base and 3.6 GHz boost while retaining the same specifications of the other Core i7 processors. We can also find the Core i7-6700HQ in this lineup with a 2.6 GHz base and 3.5 GHz boost clock. This processor features 6 MB of L3 cache compared to 8 MB found on the other chips.
The Core i5 lineup includes the Core i5-6440HQ with four cores and four threads, featuring clocks of 2.6 GHz base and 3.5 GHz boost. The chip comes with 6 MB of L3 ache and has 45W TDP (35W cTDP). The low power version of this processor, the Core i5-6442HQ has same specifications but comes with a 25W TDP and tones down the clock speeds to 1.9 GHz base and 2.7 GHz boost. There are also two Core i3 variants that include the Core i3-6100H with 2 cores and 4 threads, the clock speed is maintained at 2.7 GHz with out any turbo boost frequency and features 3 MB of L3 cache. This chip operates at 35W TDP. The low power version of this chip is the Core i3-6102H with same specifications except a lower speed of 1.9 GHz and just 25W TDP. Do note that all Core series chips (Core i7/Core i5/Core i3) feature the same GT2 iGPU found on the Skylake desktop processors with 24 EUs but variable clock speeds.
Finally, we have the Celeron models that feature to models whose names are yet to be determined but Intel did list down the specs for them. The 35W model comes with 2 cores and 2 threads, featuring 2 MB of L3 cache and GT1 graphics (8-16 EUs) while the low power version of this chip will stick to a 25W TDP and come with lower clock speeds.

Intel Skylake-U Series Lineup and Details:

Now we did detail the Skylake-U series lineup a few days ago but surprisingly, we have found two more chips that will be included in this lineup. The first chip whose name is “TBD”, comes in a dual core, multi threaded package that features clock speeds of 2.4 GHz (base), 3.4 GHz (boost) and has 4 MB of L3 cache. The second model with similar specs has different clock speeds of 2.0 GHz base and 3.1 GHz boost. Both of these models have two things in common, they feature the GT3e class iGPU and 15W TDP.
Starting with the lineup, first of all we have two Core i7 chips which include the flagship Core i7-6600U and the Core i7-6500U. You will see that Intel has once again simplified their naming scheme for mobility processors which was a serious mess with Broadwell generation of processors with weird naming schemes from the desk top range to the entire mobility series. The Core i7-6600U is a dual core with hyper threading enabled, it comes with a clock speed of 2.60 GHz and has a turbo boost of 3.40 GHz (3.20 GHz across all cores). The chip features the Intel HD Graphics 520 chip with 300 MHz base and 1050 MHz boost clock while supporting both DDR4-1866 MHz and DDR3L-1600 MHz memory. This model comes in the BGA package with a TDP of 15W that can be OEM configured down to 7.5W. The Core i7-6500U has the same specifications but comes with slower clock speeds of 2.50 GHz base and 3.10 GHz boost (3.00 across all cores). Both models feature 4 MB of L3 cache.
Moving down, we have two Core i5 and a single Core i3 model which include the Core i5-6300U, Core i5-6200U and Core i3-6100U. All the models have same specifications set of dual cores with hyper threading, Intel HD Graphics 520 (300 MHz base and 1000 MHz boost), 3 MB of L3 cache, 15W TDP and 7.5W configurable TDP. The only difference is in clock speeds where the Core i5-6300U is clocked at 2.40 GHz base and 3.00 GHz boost (2.90 across all cores), Core i5-6200 runs at 2.30 GHz base and 2.80 GHz boost (2.70 GHz across all cores) while the Core i3-6100U is clocked at 2.30 GHz clock speed and doesn’t feature boost frequency.
The Pentium and Celeron lineup forms the only two base line models of the lineup with the Pentium 4405U coming with a dual core (multi-threaded) design, clocked at 2.1 GHz (no boost clock). The chip features the HD graphics 510 chip with clock speeds of 300 MHz base and 950 MHz boost clock and support for DDR4, DDR3L and LPDDR3 memory. The chip comes with 2 MB of L3 cache and has a TDP of 15W that is configurable down to 10W. The Celeron 3955U and Celeron 3855U have dual core designs without hyperthreading, HD graphics 510 iGPUs clocked at 300 MHz base, 900 MHz boost, 2 MB of L3 cache and 15W TDPs. The 3955U is clocked at 2.0 GHz while the 3855U is clocked at 1.6 GHz.
