Nvidia Maxwell Based Tesla M60, Quadro M5000 and M4000 Professional Graphic Cards Spotted in Driver Update

Nvidia has recently added support for new Quadro based graphic cards in their driver update configuration file over at LaptopVideo2Go (Via Videocardz.com). The new models are the Nvidia Quadro M5000 and Nvidia Quadro M4000. The SIGGRAPH 2015 event is coming up and will probably see the launch of these Quadro SKUs. As noted by Videocardz, this is the same time-frame during which the Quadro Kxx2 parts were launched.

GM204 based Tesla and Quadro professional GPUs coming soon

This is going to be a relatively short update, since we don’t know much about the configuration of these GPUs. The Quadro parts are based on the GM204GL GPU while as the Tesla M60 is also based on the GM204 GPU. Since the core in question features a 256bit bus, we can expect either a 4Gb or an 8GB video buffer size – with the later being more likely considering the high end market in question. The relevant entries in the driver update are as follows:
NVIDIA_DEV.13F0.1152.103C = “NVIDIA Quadro M5000 “
NVIDIA_DEV.13F1.1153.103C = “NVIDIA Quadro M4000 “
NVIDIA_DEV.13F2= “NVIDIA Tesla M60″

In the previous generation, the x6000 variant had the x200 or the flagship GPU, the x5000 had the x204 or the middle end GPU and the x4000 variant had the low end x206 GPU. While the M6000 Quadro undoubtedly has the GM200, both the Quadro M5000 and M6000 are based on the GM204 GPU. I suspect we won’t see the GM206 make an appearance because of its low performance.
Although we do not know the specifics of the Quadro M5000 and M4000, we can safely assume that the 5000 counterpart will feature the full GM204. The M4000 on the other hand will probably feature a cut down variant – although how cut it will be is anyone’s guess. The GM204 GPU has 16 SMMs, so a good estimation would be around the 13SMM mark (± 1 SMM) with correspondingly 1536 to 1792 CUDA cores. The Tesla K60 on the other hand is expected to be a full fledged GM204 GPU with 8GB of GDDR5 vRAM. Given below is the comparison table with the new additions added.

Batman Arkham Knight – Post Patch PC vs Console Comparison

Robert Cram has released a video comparison between the console version (Xbox One) and the updated PC version post patch.
batman-arkham-knight
You can view the latest post-patch comparison below, with the previous pre-patch comparison video further down.
Xbox One version is used to represent the console game and the PC version is on an AMD R9 290x 1080p maximum settings with the available Gameworks options enabled. Smoke and paper interactions are reserved for Nvidia graphics cards only.
The first patch for the PC version of Batman Arkham Knight, which became available yesterday, fixed a bug which disabled rain effects and ambient occlusion, but did not improve performance nor did it remove the 30fps cap. Although that is promised to follow along with overall performance improvements as listed above.
The release notes of the first PC patch are as follows:
  • Fixed a crash that was happening for some users when exiting the game
  • Fixed a bug which disabled rain effects and ambient occlusion. We are actively looking into fixing other bugs to improve this further
  • Corrected an issue that was causing Steam to re-download the game when verifying the integrity of the game cache through the Steam client
  • Fixed a bug that caused the game to crash when turning off Motion Blur in BmSystemSettings.ini. A future patch will enable this in the graphics settings menu

Could the Next Battlefield be Set in the Future? ‘Battlefield 2143′ Screens Allegedly Leaked

Be forewarned, this is a completely unsubstantiated yet still quite exciting rumor. There is no reason to believe the legitimacy of the below photos. Regardless, it appears that an anonymous Redditor has posted some potato quality photos of a screen that are alleged to show the next installment in the Battlefield franchise.

Could we be going back to the future with Battlefield 2143?

The Battlefield series is going to continue, this we already know. But what direction the franchise is going to go in is unknown. Battlefield Hardline hasn’t exactly had the booming reception of Battlefield 3 or even 4, so it would make sense to try another approach based on one of the more popular titles.
There are really three directions they could go, one of which follows the plain Battlefield 5 branding that EA announced during their investors call. They could have been playing coy with the details by using a generic naming scheme there, however, and this might be a legitimate direction that EA and DICE want to go in.
But could we really be seeing a new futuristic Battlefield game? Possibly. The most likely scenario that comes to mind is the faking of these photos simply for attention. The second photo looks as if it’s pulled straight from Battlefield 2142 itself with a basic ground texture that isn’t anything like modern day Frostbite. It would be easy to photoshop in the logo and really not so hard to fake the landscape, that can’t be seen very well anyway.

There is a chance that this could be real, however. It’s possibly, though not probable, that this could be a concept being developed to present to management or even investors as a project seeking approval for funding. This, however, is not necessarily a likely scenario.
Battlefield 2142 wasn’t an immediate success in 2006, with a buggy release and in-game advertisements that didn’t quite sit well with consumers. Overall it felt as if it were a mod that wasn’t quite a complete game in it’s own right. But it still was a retail success and turned out to be a lot of fun to play.
I personally would love to see a continuation of what I thought was one of the best Battlefield games. 2142 had a lot of potential and there is a lot to explore in terms of gameplay. Modern Battlefield with a futuristic spin, but an actual more complete game would be great. But don’t hold your breath, this is all just a whisper on the wind, or perhaps a more vulgar term is appropriate.

Batman Arkham Knight PC – Benchmarked

Batman Arkham Knight on PC was an unoptimized mess. Just as the game was actually released, Rocksteady updated the game requirements of all AMD GPUs, increasing the minimum memory required from 2GB to 3GB whereas no such change was made to gamers who had NVIDIA GPUs. With the games’ release, reports started flooding in and gamers made their way onto Batman Arkham Knight forums. The game was capped at 30 fps and for good reason. Gamers reported all sorts of problems including lags stuttering and crashes. It was so bad that Rocksteady suspended sales of Batman Arkham Knight to work on the games’ bugs on the PC port. We’re still not sure when the games’ PC will make its way back onto the market.

Batman Arkham Knight PC Benchmarks

Soon afterwards AMD and NVIDIA released new drivers specifically targeting improvements on Batman Arkham and the games’ first PC patch has just been released aswell. We hope that it will improve the performance of the game further but lets have a look at the different GPU benchmarks as tested by Techspot.

Testing Methodology

Techspot benchmarked Batman Arkham Knight using “Fraps” as its inbuilt benchmark mode was quite unstable. Naturally, the game was benchmarked at 3 resolutions; 1080p, 1440p and 2160p (4K) using the highest settings allowed in-game. Enhanced rain and enhanced light shafts were enabled, while the test with interactive paper debris and interactive smoke/fog  could out be carried out as they cannot be used with AMD graphics cards.
The game was locked at 30fps but a slight modification with a configuration file helped us cross that hurdle.

Benchmarks 1920*1080

Batman 1920 1080 image
At the top we can see that NVIDIA GPUs take over with the help of GTX 980 Ti followed by R9 390X  but no way near that close. One noted performance is of the R9 290 which performs exceptionally well in an all round result making it one of the best GPUs by value for money in Batman Arkham 1080p category.
We can also see a trend of minimum fps being jammed at around 50 fps which might just be the limitation of the processor i7-5960X.  Nearing the bottom we can see 2 odd one’s out i.e. the R9 285 and the R9 380 which have performed below par relative to their respective expectations.

Benchmarks 2560*1440

Batman 2560 1440 image
At 1440p we can see that the GTX 780 was the first graphic card to keeps the minimum fps above 30 and the rest can be categorized as the elite series cards. The R9 290 outperformed the R9 390 again in terms od value for money with some fantastic results where the average is just 1fps down for the 290. The R9 390X fell just short of the GTX 980 and just as before, the GTX 980 Ti leads the way for graphic cards.

Benchmarks 3840*2160

Batman 3840 2160 image
A much shorter list for the 4K playability where even the GX 980’s minimum fps went below 30 with the R9 390X side by side. We can see that the R9 390X and 290X  were in competition despite double the VRAM in the 390X. Anything below the R9 290 was unacceptable in terms of minimum fps for the 4k performance.

The card offering the best value would be the R9 290 for me but the shining star of Batman Arkham Knight was definitely the GTX 980 Ti. That concludes the benchmarks for Batman Arkham Knight. Do share your views with us in the comments section.
