Sony Takes Water Resistant To The Next Level

Sony Teases Water-Resistant Devices for MWC; Xperia M4 Aqua Images Leak

While Sony teased the Xperia Z4 Tablet on Friday, it now has teased water-resistance for its MWC device launches. In the meanwhile, the Xperia M4 Aqua smartphone, which is tipped to launch alongside the tablet at MWC 2015 on Monday, has been leaked in images.

Sony on Friday, soon after teasing the proposed Xperia Z4 Tablet on Twitter, posted a new image of falling water and air bubbles for its MWC event with the caption "Get ready to make a splash... All will be revealed 02.03.2015."

Road To MWC 2015

Smartphone Makers Look Beyond the Handset at MWC 2015

Phone makers will seek to seduce new buyers with even smarter Internet-connected watches and other wireless gadgets as they wrestle for dominance at the world's biggest mobile fair starting Monday.

Along with the launches of numerous new smartphones - dominated by South Korean giant Samsung - tech firms are trying to conquer users' bodies and connect their environments.

Several makers are set to unveil new "smartwatches", some of which will have users chattering into their cuffs or getting on-wrist email updates, at the four-day Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in northeastern Spain.

Tech executives and regulators will meanwhile seek to chart a course for a new age of wireless networks that could lead to billions of objects being connected, from cars to refrigerators.

"It's a showpiece for smartphones in the short term, but it'll go way beyond smartphones," said Nigel Major, a top executive at tech group Laird.

"The most exciting trend we can see is the proliferation of connected devices everywhere we go. Ten years from now, virtually everything you're looking at will have the potential to be connected."

'Wearable' gadgets
On Sunday evening, Samsung is expected to unveil its Galaxy S6 smartphone, the largerGalaxy S6 Edge "phablet", and the latest in its series of watches.

Samsung is the world's biggest seller of smartphones but saw its share of the world market fall in 2014 from 34 percent to 20 percent, according to research group IDC.

It faces a squeeze by Chinese phone makers on one side and on the other by US titan Apple, which released its iPhone 6 last year.

Apple, as usual, is steering clear of the show in Barcelona, but is set to launch its own smartwatch in April.

Several other Asian heavyweights also plan launches of "wearable" gadgets on the eve of the congress, such as Korean firm LG, Chinese contender Huawei and Taiwanese makers Asus and HTC.

Designers have come up with numerous gadgets that can connect to an application on your mobile, from popular "fitness tracker" wristbands to measure your heart rate to sex toys.

Now they hope some big product launches this year can make smartwatches a mainstream gadget and boost sales of other wearables.

This year could be a "tipping point for wearables", research firm CCS Insight said in a report.

In Barcelona, "low-cost smartphones will feature prominently, as will wearables", it said. "We expect an avalanche of new products."

The road to 5G
Mobile telephones are a massive business - 2.1 billion people, or one person in three in the world, owned one in 2014, according to Linda Sui, an analyst at global tech consultancy Strategy Analytics.

But the battle for profits is shifting away from the handset to other connected objects, experts say.

"The wearable market is really going to expand because the smartphone market has reached a saturation point in developed markets," said Kevin Curran, a telecom specialist at the University of Ulster.

"So they have to be seen to be doing something else."

On a larger scale, companies and experts in Barcelona will be mulling what leaps forward in wireless coverage and technology are needed to create a new "5G" generation of super-fast and secure wireless connections.

"The path to 5G and the battle for early leadership will be one of the show's hottest topics," said Wood.

Standards have yet to be hammered out, but the mobile consortium organising the congress, GSMA, says future 5G connections could support functions such as connected cars and traffic systems.

It "will further transform the lives of individuals, businesses and societies around the world", said the GSMA's director general, Anne Bouverot.

Apple's New Tech Revolution

Apple Watch to replace car keys: Report

Apple Watch will replace your car keys and its battery will last the whole day, Apple’s Chief Executive Tim Cook told the Telegraphin an interview. The watch is designed to replace car keys and the clumsy, large fobs that are now used in many vehicles, Cook told the newspaper.

Its battery will last the whole day, and will not take as long to charge as an iPhone, the report quoted Cook as saying.

Apple Watch will also work as a credit card through Apple Pay, Cook told the paper, but did not mention how user verification will work with the watch.

The rollout of the watch might pose a challenge for Apple’s stores, which may involve “tweaking the experience in the store,” the Telegraph said, citing Cook’s conversation with the staff at Apple’s Covent Garden store in London.

Last March, Apple unveiled CarPlay, which lets drivers access contacts on their iPhones, make calls or listen to voicemails without taking their hands off the steering wheel.

Earlier this month, Reuters reported that the iPhone maker is looking at making a self-driving electric car, and is talking to experts at carmakers and automotive suppliers.

In the interview, Cook said that the Apple Watch will operate a special rewards system, track the user’s activity and “be correct to 50 milliseconds”.

Apple was not immediately available for comment.

The company has scheduled a special event on March 9, where it is expected to showcase Apple Watch, which will be launched in April.

While announcing Apple’s record-breaking earningsCEO Tim Cook had revealed a rough launch date of April 2015 for the device.

The smartwatch was announced last year in September, but the company didn’t reveal much about its availability, except that it would come in ‘early Spring’. Later, Apple retail chief, Angela Ahrendts, was more specific and revealed the Watch would come only after the Chinese New Year. She had also disclosed how Apple had started planning marketing strategies and all retail employees would be trained to help customers try out the new watch and its features.

The Apple Watch sports a squarish design instead of a circular one popularised by Motorola’s Moto 360. The Watch is crafted from custom alloys of polished or space black stainless steel (Apple Watch), space gray or silver anodized aluminum (Apple Watch Sport) and 18-karat rose or yellow gold (Apple Watch Edition). Going by the demo during its launch keynote, the Watch can do a lot of stuff. Here’s everything you need to know about the Apple Watch.

Google's New Chat Facility For Business

Google Testing Live Chat Feature That Connects Users With Businesses

While earlier this month we heard Google wastesting video chat expert advice for Google device buyers via Hangouts, it is now said to be testing a new feature using the same platform letting users chat directly with businesses they search for.

A user has spotted a new "chat" feature on the Google Search result cards for businesses on mobile, clicking on which directly leads the user to a Hangout chat window with the particular business. Spotted first by user Matt Gibstein, the screenshots by him on Twitter shows the 'Chat' option in the search results along with the Hangouts window. TechCrunch cites a Google spokesperson to confirm the feature is currently being tested. It is not clear as to when the feature will be rolled out officially.

The Hangout window screenshot also shows a message stating 'Dizengoff [the business] typically responds within hours' suggesting that users might not want to chat here if they are in a hurry. Also, if the business starts responding more quickly to user queries via the particular feature, the message might change 'hours' to 'minutes'. It has been mentioned that this new service by Google resembles Path's 'Talk' feature that too lets users chat directly with the businesses.

Google earlier this month was seen testing itsHangouts-based video chat platform to potential customers of devices on Google Play. The search giant's service is for those users who are planning to buy those Google smartphones, tablets and Chromebooks listed on the Google Play store's Devices section, and need an expert's opinion before sealing the deal.
